Residents of Kashambya Sub County in Rukiga district are counting losses after a heavy downpour that lasted several hours led to a heavy flood on Saturday.
According to Elineho Bandaganire the area Lc3 chairperson, Residents of Nyarubisi, Nyarugororo, and Nyaruhanga cells in Kitanga parish were the biggest victims of the flood.
He says that the flood destroyed properties, farmlands, and foodstuff worth millions of shillings.
Bandaganire said that they are worried that hunger might hit their area because 70% of the farmland from which residents were expecting to get food were affected.
Some of the victims who spoke to our reporter said that their houses, farms, livestock, and food crops worth several millions of shillings were destroyed. They say that they don’t even know where to start and asked the government to come to their aid.
They say that for years, they have been experiencing heavy flooding whenever it rains in their area but the most recent which happened over the weekend was the heaviest. Residents are also afraid that many more downpours could lead to further devastation in the community.
Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere, the Rukiga District LC5 chairperson said that they are aware of the catastrophe and that they will petition the relevant authorities, especially the office of the prime minister for assistance.
When contacted, the Rukiga county legislator Hon Roland Byomugyenyi Bish said that he has dispatched a team to assess the damages as he solicits some assistance from relevant offices.
