Rukungiri Municipal Council, led by Speaker Hon. Costence Tumusiime, Mayor Charles Makuru, and Town Clerk Isaiah Tumwesigye, has successfully re-revised, harmonized, and approved a UGX 17.807 billion budget for the 2026/2027 financial year during a council sitting held today.
The meeting also marked the closure of the 2025/2026 financial year and the formal approval of the new budget, following earlier disagreements and inconsistencies that had stalled its approval in a previous session held last Thursday.
According to council records, the initial budget presentation faced scrutiny after councillors raised concerns over discrepancies in figures across different sectors. This prompted a review process aimed at ensuring accuracy, transparency, and alignment with development priorities.
After thorough revisions and consultations between councillors and technical staff, the final approved budget now stands at UGX 17.807 billion, allocated across key departments as follows: Administration UGX 3.815 billion (21.4%), Health UGX 2.811 billion (15%), Education UGX 7.502 billion (42.1%), Engineering UGX 1.463 billion (8.2%), Production UGX 635.101 million (3.6%), Natural Resources UGX 450.056 million (2.5%), Finance UGX 311.5 million (1.7%), Statutory Bodies UGX 270.807 million (1.5%), Community Development UGX 171.289 million (1.1%), Trade and Industry UGX 115.329 million (0.6%), and Internal Audit UGX 60.87 million (0.3%).
Speaking after the approval, Speaker Costence Tumusiime commended both the technical team and councillors for their cooperation and commitment to ensuring a smooth budgeting process, noting that the council had successfully concluded the 2025/2026 financial year and adopted the new budget for implementation.
Councillors Innocent Rubarondesa of Kinyasano Ward and Kijukuru Viane of Kitimba Ward explained that the earlier budget impasse was due to inconsistencies in figures across departments. They noted that the subsequent review period allowed for corrections and alignment, resulting in a more transparent and credible budget.
They expressed confidence that the approved budget will drive service delivery and support development priorities within Rukungiri Municipality.
Town Clerk Isaiah Tumwesigye, together with outgoing Mayor Charles Makuru, also commended councillors and technical staff for their dedication during the concluded financial year, highlighting the importance of teamwork and accountability in improving municipal service delivery.
The council emphasized its commitment to strengthening planning, transparency, and efficient use of public resources as it embarks on the 2026/2027 financial year.
