Residents of Mishenyi Cell, Eastern Ward, Nyamirama Town Council, Kanungu District, have expressed fear over rampant theft that has developed in their community.
According to the residents, the theft cases have caused sleepless nights, putting their lives at risk of losing both their property and lives.
Speaking to Ndemerwa Lawrence, a resident of Eastern Division, he expressed his concerns saying there is reluctance among security officials who take a lot of time sleeping, creating a chance for unknown people to come and take people’s property.
Lawrence further appealed to the security officials to be more active by carrying out night patrols, which would help fight theft in their community.
Speaking to Kahororo Nicholas, a resident of Mishenyi Ward, he expressed his frustration that many properties such as coffee, bananas, including animals, are at high risk of being stolen by unknown people, which leaves people’s lives at risk.
Nicholas explained that this is caused by many people who do not want to work and end up stealing people’s property, noting that most of the young generation do not attend school and stay at home, where they engage in theft. He also noted that most suspects are taken to police and later released without being penalized.
He further requested parents and guardians to take the initiative of educating their children and provide them with work that will keep them busy, hence preventing them from engaging in theft. He also called upon the government to establish more institutions where the youth can acquire knowledge, since some have already gone beyond primary and secondary levels, which he said would help fight theft in the community.
Akantorana Janet, the councillor for Eastern Ward, Nyamirama Town Council, expressed that theft cases have reached another level, to the extent that community members have spent sleepless nights protecting their property, including coffee, bananas, and animals, which are still being stolen.
Akantorana said there are unknown people in the community who coordinate with suspects from outside areas by providing them with clear information about what is taking place. She encouraged the entire community to work hand in hand by alerting one another in case of any alarm, which would help fight theft cases in the community.
However, speaking to Lavuzeri Kahororo, the Mayor of Nyamirama Town Council, he explained that they are coordinating with the police to start carrying out serious patrols and punish those found guilty, including taking them to courts of law, which will deter others from stealing and help fight theft cases in the community.
