Farmers in Kashojwa Parish and Nyarurambi Parish in Rugyeyo Su County, Kanungu District, are facing significant concerns as their crops are being attacked by unidentified insects, causing damage to the leaves of various green crops.
The villages most affected include Rutooma and Murara in Kashojwa Parish, as well as Kyampungu in Nyarurambi Parish, as reported by their district councilor, Joseph Akakwasa.
According to Akakwasa, the insects are destroying crops such as maize, banana plantations, groundnuts, yams, cassava, and potatoes. This widespread destruction threatens the harvest for the season, leaving farmers worried about their livelihoods.
Local residents have attempted to combat the insects using available insecticides, but their efforts have been unsuccessful. They are now calling on the government, specifically the Ministry of Agriculture, to intervene by providing pest control solutions to affected farmers.
Acknowledging the issue, Godwin Nkwasibwe, the Kanungu District Production Officer, advised affected farmers to seek insecticides from agricultural supply shops. He noted that while these insects are currently in caterpillar form, they will eventually develop wings and cease their seasonal damage to the area.
In summary, farmers in Kanungu District are grappling with the destructive impact of unidentified insects on their crops, emphasizing the need for government support and effective pest control measures.
