Eleven members of a group of persons with disabilities in Rwanja West Parish, Rurehe Subcounty, Mitooma District, are celebrating a new beginning after receiving a goat each from the government to improve their household income and productivity.

The livestock distribution exercise took place on Tuesday afternoon in Ntungamo Cell, Rwanja West Parish, and was led by Kyoheirwe Jane Turyamureeba, the Parish Disabled Councillor. Turyamureeba praised the government for fulfilling the group’s earlier request for support to fight poverty among disabled citizens.

“We came together as a group of eleven with the aim of being organized and united,” said Turyamureeba. “Each member has now received a goat, which will help us generate side income. This is the third initiative I’ve coordinated during my time in office.”

Excited beneficiaries, including Francis Ruziro, Rukundo Sylvia, and Tumwebaze Jane, expressed their gratitude, pledging to rear the goats responsibly. They emphasized plans to use the animals not only for income but also for manure to boost crop farming, and eventually sell off offspring to pay for school fees and other household needs.

“The government has remembered us,” said one of the beneficiaries. “We’re proud to see such support reach people with disabilities who often feel left behind.”

Rwanja West LC2 Chairperson Barigye Augustine also commended the government’s intervention, stating he has long advocated for support to reach the disabled in his area. “These goats are healthy, and they can really improve household development and productivity,” Barigye said.

The local leadership and disabled group members pledged to maximize the opportunity and reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with government programs aimed at eradicating poverty among vulnerable groups.
