Christians from Christ the King Parish and North Kigezi Diocese are set to begin their walking pilgrimage to Namugongo on 17th May 2025.

According to Mr. Ahibisibwe Jackson, the Chairperson of Pilgrims from North Kigezi Diocese, about 140 Christians have already registered for the foot pilgrimage. He said preparations in the form of prayers and church services have already commenced.

He revealed that different groups from various archdeaconries within the North Kigezi Diocese are expected to converge at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano, where the entire group will set off for the journey to Namugongo.

Ahibisibwe noted that the resting stations for the pilgrims from Kinyasano Diocese include Rwashamire, Nyamukana, Karama, among others.

Regarding their welfare—meals, drinks, medication, and more—he explained that pilgrims usually cater for themselves. However, they receive limited support in the form of medical supplies from the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, as well as relief items donated by well-wishers.

Speaking to our reporter Mucunguzi James, the Chairperson of Christ the King Church in Rukungiri said they will also start their journey on Saturday, 17th May 2025, and about 40 pilgrims have registered to walk.

He stated that people participate in this journey of faith to pray for their personal intentions and healing. He noted that many testimonies have been shared by people who were healed of various diseases after participating in the pilgrimage.

Mucunguzi also shared that during the walk, pilgrims engage in evangelism by preaching to people they meet, including prostitutes and drug addicts, offering counseling and encouraging them to change their lives.

Byamugisha David, the Chairperson of Nyakibale Parish Pilgrims, expressed concern over the major challenges faced by pilgrims during the long trek. These include swollen legs, general body pain—especially in the legs—and cardiovascular issues, in addition to challenges accessing clean water.

The Uganda Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo has in recent years become an acclaimed international pilgrimage site, attracting visitors from around the world. This year’s Martyrs Day Celebration will be led by Lugazi Diocese, under the theme:
“Lord, let me see again.” – Mark 10:51.
