Elders from Rubaare, Ntungamo District, have continued to express their gratitude to the government for providing a monthly stipend of 25,000 shillings. However, they are requesting an increase, stating that the amount is too small.

Robert Sikubwabo, an elder from Omungyenyi Parish in Rubaare Sub County, shared that this money is distributed monthly, but it is often insufficient for the needs of the elders in the area. Sikubwabo explained that many elders travel long distances, often by boda boda, to collect the money. Some also require special medical treatment, which makes the amount inadequate. He is therefore urging the authorities to increase the stipend so that elders can benefit more from the government’s support.

John Twinomujuni, the LC2 Chairperson of Omungyenyi Parish, spoke with our reporter, highlighting that the government’s initiative was introduced to assist the elderly, many of whom are vulnerable, unemployed, or in need of special care. While he acknowledged that the stipend is helpful, he emphasized that it is too small, particularly for elders who are weak and unable to engage in income-generating activities. On their behalf, Twinomujuni is requesting the government to consider increasing the amount.

Simeon Kakoona, the head of the elders in Rubaare Sub County, confirmed that the stipend is indeed too small. He further mentioned that they had previously discussed the issue with the relevant authorities, and criticized members of Parliament for delaying the proposed increase, despite the fact that the president had supported the idea of raising the amount.
