Rev. Fr. Byomuhangi John Fisher, the parish priest of Rutooma Catholic Parish in Kabale Diocese, has challenged residents in Buhunga to control their expenses and ensure they save money for the future.

He made the remarks yesterday, December 31, 2024, while addressing members of Buhunga SACCO Limited during the SACCO’s Christmas Bonanza 2024. The event, which included a gift draw for SACCO members, was held at the SACCO headquarters in Karisizo Trading Center, Buhunga Sub-County, Rukungiri District.

Fr. Fisher noted that many Ugandans tend to spend all the money they earn without planning for the future, a habit that hinders financial prosperity. He emphasized that self-imposed charity that leads to personal financial strain is counterproductive, stating that God disapproves of those who overextend themselves in helping others and then resort to lamentation and begging.

He also highlighted the importance of unity in combating poverty and urged SACCO members to adhere to SACCO rules and regulations by saving, buying shares, borrowing responsibly, and repaying on time.

Jackson Byamukama, the SACCO board chairperson and a retired community development officer, encouraged members to embrace saving with discipline, noting that proper saving can provide financial independence in old age. He emphasized investing in both short-term and long-term income-generating projects as a way to address current and future poverty-related challenges.

According to Alex Rutakomberwa, the Buhunga SACCO General Manager, members who were awarded during the event included those who had significantly increased their savings since October this year.
