Residents, mostly the married, from Rurehe Sub-county in Mitooma District have been urged to avoid excessive use of drugs, which are becoming the main cause of increased domestic violence in this sub-county.

It is reported that drugs like alcohol, marijuana, and others are excessively used by most of the people in Rurehe, which has continued to fuel domestic violence.

According to Evelyne Muhimbo, the chairperson LC3 Rurehe Sub-county, they have tried as much as they can to reduce this habit, but she continued to blame residents who hide people who deal in these drugs. She also blamed the government for not putting a clear law against these drugs.

Additionally, Evelyne continued to say that the increasing cases of domestic violence are also a result of poverty, where family heads fight to own resources like coffee and other sources of income.

However, she revealed that in order to end this, as leaders, when they receive such cases, they equally distribute property to family heads so that some people like children don’t suffer. But this is done with the willingness of those family members.

Due to this domestic violence, Muhimbo has continued to say that there have been family breakages, child labour and suffering, and even school dropouts.

She therefore continued to advise married couples that though the income may be small, cooperation and trustworthiness can be a better way to avoid domestic violence.
