Residents of Garuka Cell, Kikarara Parish, Bwambara Sub County, Rukungiri District, have been offered a ray of hope with the promise of safe and clean water, generously donated by Dr. Tom Heywood from America.

Dr. Tom Heywood, brought to the cause by his ally Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe of the North Kigezi Diocese, expressed his heartfelt commitment during a gathering held yesterday, Tuesday, April 23, 2024.

Accompanied by Bishop Onesmus Asiimwe, Bishop’s Chaplain Rev. Frank Kiconco, Venerable George Bazahuza, the Archdeacon of Bwambara Archdeaconry, and Mr. Christopher Kagayano, the Chairperson LC3 of Bwambara Sub County, among other distinguished guests, Dr. Heywood conveyed his message at a site assessment held at Garuka Primary School playground in Kikarara Parish.

Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe hailed the initiative as a crucial step towards providing safe and clean water to combat waterborne diseases in the area.
Expressing his motivation, Dr. Tom Heywood emphasized his donation as an act of love, aimed at promoting well-being and strengthening his bond with Bishop Onesimus Asiimwe.

Gideon Bandonda, the Lay Leader of Garuka Church of Uganda, emphasized the necessity of purchasing bottled mineral water for baptism ceremonies due to the absence of clean water sources in the area.
Scovia Katusiime, the Sub County Woman Councilor representing Kikarara, highlighted the dire situation in Garuka Cell, where residents face challenges such as high costs for water containers and encounters with wildlife and park rangers while searching for water sources near Queen Elizabeth National Park, particularly affecting women.
Wilson Twebaze, the Chairperson LC1 of Garuka Cell, voiced concern over the prevalence of waterborne diseases, which hinder development as people are frequently hospitalized.
The team conducted tours of Garuka, Nyakabungo, Karyamacumu, and Nyakatembe Churches of Uganda, which are also slated to benefit from the installation of community water harvesting tanks.
