Residents from Nyarutuntu Sub County in Ntungamo District have continued to raise their concern over increased domestic violence in their area.

It is reported that these cases in the sub-county are increasing rapidly, which has continued to worry both residents and leaders.

One of the residents, who preferred anonymity, blamed the situation on poverty, which he said is being fueled by the government’s failure to create more employment opportunities, leaving many people unemployed.

Charles Bagarukayo, another resident, also said that the main cause of this challenge is poverty, which forces married couples to fight, leading to child neglect and an increase in single mothers and fathers. He also noted that as leaders, they continue to suffer while trying to resolve such cases, which are reported frequently.

According to John Wilton Katooma, the LC3 Chairperson of Nyarutuntu Sub County, the situation is caused by excessive drug use, failure to attend prayers, and neglect of family responsibilities.

Additionally, he said that increased gambling among men has worsened the situation, as it forces them to steal from their families, hence causing fights. He therefore advised couples to understand and fulfill their responsibilities in order to curb this deadly habit.
