Residents of Kabura Cell, Kabwoma Parish in Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri District encountered disagreements on Thursday, 13th November 2024, with their LC1 Chairperson, Mary Tumwine, over a disputed communal work activity.
On Thursday morning, the community gathered to rehabilitate Rwabutera Bridge, which floods had recently washed away, and to clear a pathway obstructed by the river. However, tensions arose during the work when Annet Gumisiriza discovered her crops had been destroyed as part of the efforts to clear the way.
Emmanuel Kobusheshe, one of the residents, emphasized the community’s commitment to repairing the bridge and opening the way, highlighting the importance of ensuring the safety of students and protecting them from the risk of drowning.
Annet Gumisiriza, the Parish Woman Councilor and Deputy Sub County Speaker, explained that the bridge’s poor condition had forced residents to pool resources and organize a large-scale communal effort for rehabilitation. She noted that the bridge was not included in the Sub County’s budget.
Mary Tumwine, the LC1 Chairperson, expressed her support for communal work but criticized the group for damaging her crops without prior consent and for verbally abusing her when she inquired about the incident. She indicated that she would seek legal advice regarding compensation for the destruction of her crops.
