The Deputy Governor of Uganda, Prof. Augustus Niwagaba, has called on the people of Kigezi to embrace the proper utilization of Parish Development Model (PDM) funds to foster community development and boost government tax revenue.
Prof. Niwagaba made these remarks during the induction ceremony of Rev. Golden Akatuhurira at St. James Kijuguta Church of Uganda in Kabale Municipality. The event, presided over by the Very Rev. Obed Turihohabwe, Dean of Kigezi Diocese, emphasized the importance of effective government program implementation in creating development opportunities and enhancing economic growth.
Highlighting the role of unity in progress, Prof. Niwagaba urged residents to work together and eliminate religious divisions, which he identified as a key barrier to regional advancement. He emphasized that collaboration is essential for poverty eradication and sustainable development.
Additionally, he expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni for his continued support of the Kigezi region, citing his own appointment as Deputy Governor as a testament to the government’s commitment. He also congratulated Rev. Golden Akatuhurira on his dedication to serving the church and the community.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha, Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Wakiso, echoed similar sentiments, urging Christians to unite in the fight against poverty. He stressed that poverty affects all community members regardless of religious affiliation, calling for collective efforts to uplift livelihoods.
Hon. Catherine Ndamira, the Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament, encouraged Christians to support Rev. Golden in his new role. She emphasized that unity within the church would enhance its growth and strengthen community bonds.
Leaders at the event acknowledged that religious divisions have historically hindered development in Kigezi, even influencing the region’s political landscape. However, they reaffirmed their commitment to fostering unity and promoting socio-economic progress for all.
