Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in Southwestern Uganda, Kabale District, has recently confirmed a resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

Dr. Anne Namutebi, a physician at the hospital, stated that five patients have tested positive and are currently receiving medical care. Dr. Namutebi expressed her concern about the persistent nature of COVID-19, likening it to other influenza viruses. The hospital has designated the medical ward as an isolation center to manage the current cases.

Emphasizing the importance of accurate information, Dr. Namutebi cautioned the public about misinformation and reiterated that COVID-19 is still prevalent and spreading among Ugandans. She anticipates future surges and urges vigilance.

Henry Kanya, the hospital epidemiologist, reported that 54 percent of the population in Kigezi sub-region, approximately 400,253 people, has received vaccination. Alfred Besigensi, the Kabale District Health Educator, stressed the crucial role of public participation in vaccination campaigns and adherence to safety measures to curb the spread of the virus.

Despite the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring the end of the global health emergency for COVID-19 on May 5, 2023, with a transition to managing the virus alongside other infectious diseases, the recent resurgence in Kabale highlights the ongoing challenges and the need for continued public health measures. As of November 2023, 72% of people worldwide had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, resulting in a significant reduction in severe illness and hospitalizations, with 13.6 billion doses administered globally.
