In a bid to improve waste management and promote cleanliness in Rukungiri Municipality, Counsel Isaac Atukunda, an aspiring Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality, has donated eight garbage skips under his “Keep Rukungiri Clean” campaign.

While handing over the garbage skips, Counsel Isaac emphasized that the initiative aligns with the presidential directive requiring the placement of one bin every 200 meters, a standard already being implemented in major cities. He noted that the donation is intended to support Rukungiri Municipality’s efforts in improving garbage disposal and maintaining a clean environment.

The donation follows the official launch of the “Keep Rukungiri Clean” campaign on May 2, 2025, during which Isaac and his team conducted a town cleaning exercise. It was during this exercise that he realized the municipality was grappling with a serious shortage of dustbins, prompting him to act.

“I discovered that Rukungiri Municipality never had enough dustbins, which called for this initiative of at least providing some for garbage disposal,” said Counsel Isaac.

He further urged residents to embrace responsible waste disposal practices by making proper use of the newly installed bins. He stated that his plan is to install more garbage skips in high-traffic areas across the entire municipality, beginning with the central business district and gradually expanding coverage.

Counsel Isaac also lauded the municipal administration for supporting his initiative and granting him the necessary permission to implement it within the municipality.

Members of the business community have applauded the initiative, describing it as a welcome intervention. Macklin Twongirwe from Bwooma and Fred Mucunguzi from Nyakibaale expressed their gratitude for the donation, highlighting that it addresses a key challenge that local traders have been facing.

“As business dealers, we have been facing a challenge of lacking enough dustbins. Our customers have been littering the town because there was nowhere to dispose of waste,” said Twongirwe.

Mucunguzi and Twongirwe both called on fellow residents to take ownership of the new skips and use them responsibly to enhance cleanliness in Rukungiri.
