Counsel Isaac Atukunda recently launched a project aimed at constructing six new water springs across all municipal divisions in Rukungiri.
The initiative seeks to enhance access to clean water and improve the maintenance of existing facilities to combat the high prevalence of waterborne diseases in the local population.
Counsel Isaac emphasized the vital importance of water in human lives and recognized the struggles faced by residents in accessing clean water, often having to travel long distances. The project targets to benefit over 500 households, totaling more than 1500 people, by providing protected springs in areas such as Katenga Cell, Rwentondo, Nyamayenje, and Fuluma.
The locals, who have been relying on unsafe and inadequate water sources for their daily needs, including drinking and household activities, expressed gratitude for the initiative. They highlighted the significant impact of water scarcity on their lives, leading to the spread of waterborne diseases and hindering children’s education due to long journeys to fetch water.
To ensure the sustainability of the project, Counsel Isaac urged the establishment of management committees for each protected spring. The locals pledged their support, acknowledging Counsel Isaac’s commitment to their welfare and expressing their willingness to back his candidacy for the NRM seat in Rukungiri municipality.
