Rukungiri district councilors have expressed concern over the sale of district livestock at Bwanga stock farm and the failure to replace them.

The district allocated 100 acres of land in Bwanga Nyarushanje sub-county to be used as the district farm to generate revenue.

Councilors say that by the time they started their term of office, they realized that the previous council had sold livestock worth 26 million.

In 2022, the current leadership also sold another livestock worth 46 million, in addition to 16 cows and goats which were sold this year.

They say that the district Production Committee promised to buy another livestock but to date, nothing has been achieved.

The district Councilor representing Nyarushanje Sub-county who doubles as the secretary for Health Mwesigwa Mathias Rwabugumi says that the people of Nyarushanje Sub-county sacrificed their land to the government but they have not benefited and the farm is running empty

He added that the district is at risk of losing the proposal made by the State Minister for Agriculture Hon Bright Rwamirama to establish a Diagnostic center worth over 2.7 billion for the Kigezi sub-region.
The Buyanja sub-county district councilor Mugisha Albert Rwamugaata noted that selling and not replacing these animals is becoming a culture. He added that this must be addressed.
When contacted, the district secretaries for Production, Works, and Natural Resources who are responsible for this project, said that the money they received from sales was transferred to the central government and they are requesting it back to buy new breeds of animals to restock the farm.
Speaking with our reporter, Geoffery Kyomukama the district boss, noted that they are looking forward to investing more money in this farm and upgrading it but the process is being delayed by Central Government.
