Councilors from Ruhinda Sub County, Rukungiri District, have raised alarm over the alarming misuse of ARV (antiretroviral) drugs by some patients. The drugs, which are meant to help individuals living with HIV/AIDS, are reportedly being sold to pig farmers for fertility purposes or given away for free to other individuals, jeopardizing public health.
Maureen Kasande, the Rwamugoma Woman Parish Councilor, who also serves as the Sub County Secretary for Social Services and Sub County VHT Coordinator, voiced strong concerns regarding the misuse of ARVs. She called on local authorities to take immediate action to prevent the use of these life-saving drugs for purposes unrelated to HIV treatment.
Ronald Kwesiga, the Ruhinda Sub County Health Inspector, confirmed reports of ARV misuse in Kajunju Cell, Ndere Parish. He also mentioned the involvement of some civil servants in smuggling these drugs, further exacerbating the situation. Kwesiga assured that the authorities are taking steps to address the issue and manage the misuse effectively.
In response to the situation, Kwizeera Gershom, the Ruhinda Sub County Chief, acknowledged the gravity of the issue and outlined ongoing efforts to tackle the problem. The local government is committed to ensuring that ARVs are properly distributed and used only for their intended purpose.
The concerned leaders are calling for immediate action to curb the misuse of ARVs and safeguard the health of both patients and the community.
