Local leaders from Rwenshama Parish, Bwambara Sub County, Rukungiri District, are expressing concerns about the low levels of education in their area, which they attribute to parental negligence.

These concerns were raised on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, during a security meeting held at Rwenshama Landing Site, led by the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner, Steven Nsubuga Bewayo. Ahimbisibwe Amzan, who is the Sub County Councilor representing Rwenshama Parish and also the Speaker of Bwambara Sub County, highlighted the issues.

Amzan pointed out that Rwenshama Public Primary School does not have a Uganda Primary Leaving Examinations center number due to the failure to register 25 candidates for Primary Seven. He noted that there are children in the area, but many drop out of school, and this is primarily due to parental neglect. Furthermore, he mentioned that the current Primary Seven candidates at Rwenshama Public Primary School have to travel approximately 7 kilometers to Kikarara Parish to sit for their examinations, which is a challenging situation.

Rwenshama Parish has a high population that relies mainly on fishing in Lake Edward. However, Amzan criticized the government for not providing support in terms of resources such as coffee seedlings, piggery, and goats, among other things.

Nuwagaba Keneth, the Chairperson of LC2 in Rwenshama Parish, revealed that the enrollment in lower classes is high, but students are often transferred to distant schools, and some drop out due to the low standards of education at the local school, which can be attributed to unreliable teachers.

Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner, Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, urged parents in Rwenshama Landing Site to stop relying solely on fishing in Lake Edward as their primary source of income and instead prioritize the education of their children.
