Residents of Kyatoko Ward in the Eastern Division of Rukungiri Municipality are increasingly concerned about the rising transport fares due to the poor condition of the Half London – Buhumuriro – Mugamba road, which is maintained by the Municipal Council.
This road serves a significant number of vehicles traveling between Rukungiri Municipality town and Buhunga Sub County, carrying students, goods, and services. Currently, the road is impassable, leading to a sharp increase in motorcycle transport fares from 2000/= to 5000/=. This situation has also resulted in injuries and losses for some residents.
Jacenta Turyaabe, an elderly woman, expressed her worries about the deteriorating road conditions and its impacts on the community. Christopher Bamanyisa Kashaija, the Municipal Councilor representing Kyatoko Ward, acknowledged the challenges caused by water runoff from Kyatoko hill slopes. He advised farmers to refrain from damaging water channels to facilitate better water management.
His Worship Charles Makuru, the Mayor of Rukungiri Municipal Council, assured residents that the rehabilitation of the road is included in the municipality’s work plan. However, he noted that the progress has been delayed due to issues with the grader, which is currently under repair. The mayor expects the road rehabilitation to commence soon.
