Concerns have been raised by road users along the Kabale-Kisoro road regarding the prolonged completion of repairs to the damaged section in Bwaara Village, located in Hamurwa Sub County of Rubanda District.
The section of the road collapsed on May 4, 2023, following heavy rainfall in the area. This road is vital as it serves as a crucial link connecting Uganda to neighboring countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. In October of the same year, the government awarded a contract to Greystone Investment Ltd to repair the damaged section for 3.7 Billion Shillings, with a scheduled completion period of four months, which expired the previous month.
Residents, and leaders, including Sarah Asiimwe, Apollo Kampikaho, John Byamukama, and Rubanda District LCV Chairperson Stephen Kasyaba, have expressed frustration over the delayed completion. They highlight its impact on the transportation of goods to markets and neighboring countries, emphasizing the ongoing risk posed to users. They mention a tragic accident from late last year, resulting in the loss of a 71-year-old resident named Thomas Bukuru from Shebeya Village in Hamurwa sub-county.
Allan Ssempebwa, spokesperson for the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), has stated that they are actively engaging with the contractor to expedite the road works. However, efforts to obtain a comment from Ibrahim Bwiine, the contractor’s representative during the project launch, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to repeated phone calls.
