Rukungiri district leaders under the Forum for democratic change party (FDC) have asked Dr. Kiiza Besigye to reconsider political retirement and have another shot at running for political office to resolve the current political impasse and misdirection of political parties arguing that his command is necessary in giving a national political direction.
The leaders are former Rukungiri Municipality MP Mr. Roland Mugume Kaginda, Rukungiri district FDC Chairperson Virginia Kyarugahe, the former Woman MP Ms. Betty Bamukwasa Muzanira, Former Rujumbura County MP Fred Tumuheirwe Turyamuhweza among other leaders told Dr. Besigye to his face on Saturday that his leaving political space has created a political vacuum that is being felt in all political parties.
Mr. Kaginda said during a Born-Again Crusade at Bagahwe Trading center in Bugangari sub-county Rukungiri district on Saturday that Dr. Besigye was presiding over, that his absence from the political space has created a vacuum affecting political parties and the struggle for freedom in the country.
Ms. Muzanira said Dr. Besigye needed to allow leaders to start campaigning for his reelection in 2026 and mobilize for registration and structure formation of the party and other willing Ugandans if real change must be achieved.
However, Dr Besigye was dismissive of the electoral process as a change measure under President Museveni reechoing his earlier stance that the elections should only be used for mobilization for a peaceful transition for citizens to regain their lost right to choose leaders.
Following his not standing in the 2021 elections, several leaders in Rukungiri district on FDC tickets lost their seats in the elections that only had a 42% turn up there. FDC lost its hold on the district vote losing to NRM over 90% of all elective positions.
He said he had committed the remaining years of his life to the struggle to have the country return to the citizens’ rule and shall not be swayed by anything.
Dr Besigye was the guest of honor at the closure of the four days crusade organized by Pastor Arthur Tabaro who is also the LC I chairman on the FDC ticket of Kanyankyende village in Bugangari Sub County.
