The Ministry of Water and Environment has launched a new initiative to address climate change in Kanungu and Rukungiri districts. The Climate Surveillance Irrigation Project, funded by the Government of Uganda and the World Bank at a cost of 2.2 billion shillings, aims to promote environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture.

The project, currently being implemented in Kihanda Sub-county, focuses on planting trees, conserving soil and water, and protecting rivers and dam sites from siltation. Local residents are actively participating by digging trenches, planting grass, and collecting rainwater—efforts expected to improve water supply over time.

Speaking during a brief assessment at the Kihanda LC3 headquarters, Contract Manager Mwesigwa Andrew acknowledged the vast scope of the project but noted that they are starting with critical zones and are optimistic about receiving additional funding to expand the work.

LC3 Chairperson Asiimwe Davis welcomed the project and called on residents to embrace it and adopt modern farming techniques to ensure its success. Sub-county Chief Tindiwegyi Justus confirmed that local leaders are working closely with the project team to ensure smooth implementation.

Nyakatooma Parish Chief Solomon Akatwujuka expressed optimism, saying community members are eager to learn sustainable farming practices and are hopeful for continued government support.
