Christians at Kabura Catholic Center, under Christ the King Parish in Kabwoma, Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri District, have expressed disappointment in Hon. Minister Jim Muhwezi Katugugu, accusing him of neglecting their Church community.
The concerns were raised on Sunday, 25th May 2025, during a fundraising mass aimed at supporting the ongoing construction of a new church building. The Minister had been invited as the Chief Guest but came under sharp criticism from parishioners who accused him of favoring distant Anglican institutions and schools over their local Catholic projects, despite their unwavering support for him during elections.
Julius Nuwensiima, head of the laity at Kabura Catholic Center, commended the Christians for their resilience and continued commitment to the construction project despite receiving minimal external support. He encouraged them to remain united and persistent until the project is completed.
Herbert Magezi, a farmer and aspiring Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County, used the occasion to rally the youth towards self-reliance. He encouraged them to engage in homestead income-generating activities such as poultry, piggery, and coffee farming, which offer quick returns.
Godson Mubangizi, the LC3 Chairperson of Nyakagyeme Sub County, delivered a contribution of Shs 2 million from Hon. Jim Muhwezi but noted that it came without an accompanying message. He also urged church and school leaders to prioritize hiring watchmen to combat rising cases of theft and support local law enforcement efforts.
Obed Mwesigwa Mayanja, the Speaker of Nyakagyeme Sub County, donated five bags of cement and encouraged Christians to offer their most valued possessions to God, believing such sacrifices attract blessings.
Rev. Father Zephirino Tumwejunise from St. Charles Lwanga Seminary Nyakibale, who led the mass, emphasized the need for constructing decent places of worship. He reminded congregants that while clergy may be transferred or retire, the Christian community remains and deserves permanent, dignified places to worship.
In response to the concerns raised, Isaac Kaharuza, Political Assistant to Hon. Jim Muhwezi, attributed the incident to a miscommunication and assured the congregation of an appropriate response soon.
The fundraising event successfully raised Shs 7,047,000 and received 27 bags of cement.
