Butchers have received a cautionary advisory against vending meat that has not undergone the requisite safety checks during this festive season. This alert coincides with reports of more than 29 cows succumbing to an unidentified disease in Nyakishenyi Subcounty.

The warning was issued by Godfrey Asiimwe, a veterinary doctor in Kebisoni Town Council. He emphasized that during festive periods, many butchers have a tendency to sell uninspected meat, circumventing scrutiny by meat inspection officers.

As a response to the anthrax outbreak among animals in Masaka district, Godfrey urged the public to be cautious and abstain from consuming or purchasing meat from deceased animals. He outlined symptoms of the disease, such as weakness, fever, difficulty breathing, and blood oozing from the animal.

Godfrey emphasized the importance of avoiding uninspected meat, urging residents to only purchase meat that has been scrutinized by government health officers, identifiable by an official stamp indicating the date of inspection.

Failure to adhere to this advice poses risks to both life and health. Residents were encouraged to report any butchers selling uninspected meat to the relevant authorities. Those found vending substandard meat to the public will face legal consequences and potential arrest.
