Buyanja Sub County authorities in Rukungiri District bid farewell to their former OC Police Post, Nabbale Ruth, who recently transferred to Omukitooro Entebbe. Ruth served at Buyanja Sub County/Town Council Police Post for seven years since her attachment in 2016.

The farewell ceremony took place during a council session held on Thursday at Rugarama Sub County, Ntungamo District. This session followed a study tour aimed at benchmarking the operations of matooke markets, which are known as the primary revenue collectors in the region.

Rugarama Sub County boasts four open matooke markets: Kyabirara in Nyakabungo Parish operates on Thursdays, generating 7 million; Katungamo in Katungamo Parish operates on Mondays, fetching 1.5 million; Ngomba in Ngomba Parish operates on Sundays, bringing in 1.5 million; and Kyempene in Kagongi Parish operates on Fridays, generating 1.5 million monthly.

Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the Chairperson LC3 Buyanja Sub County, expressed the dissatisfaction of the people in Buyanja regarding Nabbale Ruth’s transfer. He disclosed that road renovation works in Buyanja Sub County had been suspended until rainfall normalizes due to excessive rain causing complications.

Nuwagaba Sarah Yegabe, the Sub County Chief Buyanja, stated that the study tour served as an eye-opener for the councilors to encourage locals to engage in revenue-generating activities. She described the transfer of Nabbale Ruth as a loss.

Before the council session at Rugarama Sub County Council hall, the authorities toured Kyabirara open matooke market. They were surprised by the high prices of bananas, with Mukuumi Richard, the market tenderer, revealing that a banana costs up to 90,000, contributing to a monthly revenue of 7 million.

The tour also included visits to model banana farmers such as Kenneth Rubuga with over 20 acres of high-quality banana plantation and Retired Major Kazinduki Silvestiri with over 5 acres in Nyakahita Cell, Nyakabungo Parish, Rugarama Sub County.

Mucunguzi Herbert Kiiza, the Chairperson LC3 Rugarama Sub County, welcomed the authorities and enlightened them on the pillars of starting up a market, emphasizing the need for stable local production of bananas and vendors in the area.

Mugisha Albert Rwamugaata, the District Councilor representing Buyanja Sub County, Karahukayo Charles, the Buyanja Sub County Councilor representing Nyabiteete Parish, and Bitariho Fred Ekyoma, the Buyanja Sub County representative for Rubanga Parish, expressed gratitude, describing the tour as educative. They pledged to become examples while sensitizing their fellow community members.
