Leaders in Buyanja Sub-county have expressed concern over the rising cases of domestic violence, linking the trend to an increase in deaths and growing social challenges within families.

The LCIII Chairperson, Agaba Emmy Rubondo, said domestic violence has become a serious issue in the area, with alcohol abuse identified as a major contributing factor. He explained that excessive drinking during working hours has disrupted family life, leaving parents with little time to guide and support their children.

According to Rubondo, this neglect has contributed to an increase in early marriages and involvement of children in negative peer groups, with many left loitering in villages without proper supervision.

He further noted that domestic conflicts are also being fueled by economic challenges, as some individuals attribute their poverty to reduced productivity. In addition, land disputes between parents and children have escalated tensions, often resulting in family violence.

In response, local leaders have launched community sensitization efforts to educate residents on the dangers of domestic violence. Rubondo urged couples to reduce alcohol consumption, promote mutual respect, and strengthen family bonds in order to restore harmony in their homes.

He also emphasized the importance of parental responsibility, encouraging families to provide equal opportunities for both boys and girls and to remain actively involved in their children’s upbringing as a way of reducing conflicts and safeguarding their future.

Rubondo appealed to parents to uphold love and respect within their households, stressing that strong family values are key to addressing the growing cases of domestic violence in the sub-county.
