Police in Bushenyi District have arrested a 21-year-old woman on allegations of infanticide.
The incident happened on 27/02/2025 at around 9:00 PM in Kigongo LC 1, Kyamuhunga Sub-county, Bushenyi District.
Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as a five-month-old child.
Tumusiime further identified the suspect as Charity Ayebazibwe, a 21-year-old bar operator and resident of Bugongo LC 1, Kyamuhunga Sub-county.
It is alleged that the child had been suffering from an incurable illness for some time and later died. The suspect, who had not been in contact with the child’s father due to neglect, reportedly had no place to bury the body and decided to dispose of it in a pit latrine.
On 17/03/2025, residents became suspicious after noticing that the suspect, who previously had two children, was now seen with only one. When questioned by the local authorities, she admitted that the child had died and the body was thrown into a pit latrine. She was subsequently arrested and taken to the police for further inquiries.
Tumusiime stated that the body was retrieved from the pit latrine and taken to Kitagata General Hospital in Sheema District for a postmortem as investigations continue.
