There was drama in Bushenyi-Ishaka municipality when taxi operators and owners staged a peace demonstration accusing municipality officials of not allocating them a taxi park.

Mucunguzi the chairperson of Bushenyi Ishaka municipality Taxi Drivers and Owners’ Association said they don’t have a bus park and taxi park and now they have resorted to loading their vehicles along the main road in Ishaka town.

While addressing the disgruntled taxi drivers at the leisure park in Ishaka town, the Bushenyi District Resident District Commissioner Robert Atuhairwe said for anyone to operate a business in the municipality must have authorization from the local leadership.

Richard Byaruhanga the Bushenyi Ishaka municipality mayor, said there are policies and guidelines to follow while doing business in Bushenyi Ishaka municipality and taxi operators must follow them.

He said the issue of the taxi park is getting sorted by the central government since it has started clearing the money amounting to 2.7 billion to have it handled.

Deus Mukyenga the chairperson of Ishaka division said that if taxi operators cannot use the available peace and resources given to them by Bushenyi Ishaka municipality at a time when they don’t have a taxi park they will be chased away. He asked them to cooperate with the authorities if their issues are to be handled in time.

However, when contacted, John Bosco Sserujogi the DPC Bushenyi District said, there is a need for a meeting with all stakeholders in the transport business and municipality leadership to find a lasting solution.

He said that Uganda is operating an open economy where everyone has a right to operate a business and these taxi drivers can’t be chased.

He tasked the group to design a route chat to help the authorities find means of allocating them space.
