Boona Fm Rugamba Mazima, with its frequency at 91.8, has officially launched the Boona FM Cup, a football tournament set to be competed among all the sub-counties and town councils in Rukungiri district.
The launch took place at Boona FM headquarters on October 6th, 2023.
Mr. Maanige Wenceslas, one of the executive directors of Boona FM, explained that the purpose of this initiative is to identify and nurture local talent while also fulfilling the station’s social responsibility by giving back to the community.
Mr. Maanige further revealed that this tournament is a first-of-its-kind event in the district. The winning team representing a specific sub-county or town council will be rewarded with a trophy and a bull worth three million shillings.
The football tournament will feature 16 teams representing sub-counties, town councils, and divisions from both Rukungiri district and Rukungiri municipality. Each team has received a football to start training at their respective sub-county levels.
Mr. Maanige emphasized that this tournament will become an annual event and called upon sports enthusiasts, Boona FM listeners, local leaders, and stakeholders to support the teams representing their areas with various contributions, including team uniforms, balls, playing shoes, refreshments, and transport, among others.
Mr. Amos Buhe, the tournament chairman who doubles as the chairman DFA Rukungiri, announced that the competitions at the sub-county level are scheduled to commence on Sunday, October 15th, 2023, with the winners advancing to represent their county at the district level.
He commended Boona FM for its commitment to sports fans not only in Rukungiri district but also in the entire region, believing that this initiative will rekindle the glory of sports in the district.
Mr. Buhe urged team representatives from across the district to mobilize players aged 18 and above for training, emphasizing that this activity will contribute to the development of talent in the district.
He encouraged them to maintain the highest standards of professionalism to allow all players in their respective sub-counties to showcase their talent in the Boona FM Cup.
Several team mobilizers representing different sub-counties and town councils praised Boona FM for organizing the tournament, expressing their determination to implement it with enthusiasm.
