The 3rd edition of the Boona Cup, Rukungiri District’s biggest annual football tournament, kicked off this morning with subcounties, divisions, and town councils clashing for qualification to the next round. Matches were held across three playgrounds, with fans turning out in large numbers to support their favorite teams.

In Group C, matches were played at Bugangari Health Center Four Playground. Teams included Buhunga Subcounty, Bugangari Subcounty, Rwerere Town Council, and Bikurungu Town Council. Buhunga S/C was scheduled to open the tournament against Bikurungu T/C but arrived two hours late, delaying their fixture. Rwerere T/C and Bugangari S/C advanced to the next round, both finishing with 5 points each.

In Group A, matches took place at Rumbugu Playground. Buyanja T/C progressed to the next round with 9 points, joined by Kebisoni S/C with 4 points. Western Division, with 3 points, and Buyanja Subcounty, with 1 point, were eliminated.

Group D matches were held at Nyakanyinya Stadium in Ruhinda Subcounty. Ruhinda S/C and Eastern Division advanced to the quarterfinals, while Bwambara S/C, with 3 points, and Nyakagyeme S/C, with no points, were eliminated.

Matches for Group B, which was set to be played at Nyarushanje Model Playground, were postponed due to an important BAF function held at the venue. Teams in this group include Kebisoni T/C, Nyakishenyi S/C, Nyarushanje S/C, and Southern Division.

The tournament has not only brought football excitement to Rukungiri but also boosted local businesses. In Bugangari Subcounty, business entrepreneurs led by Mrs. Pharazio Kasande, Mr. Twinamatsiko Moses Kacere, and Mrs. Ruth Kamugisha expressed gratitude to Boona FM for organizing the event. The tournament provided an opportunity to sell products and generate income, and the entrepreneurs urged Boona FM to consider hosting monthly editions to further support local livelihoods.

The Boona Cup continues to unite communities, showcase local talent, and provide economic opportunities across Rukungiri District.
