Boaz Kansiime Matiita has emerged victorious in the hotly contested NRM primary elections for Rukungiri Municipality mayoral race, securing a commanding lead and positioning himself as the party’s flag bearer for the 2026 general elections.
Announced at exactly 11:35 PM on July 24 by the NRM Elections Officer Elias Katureebe, the results showed Matiita garnering 5,106 votes (82.2%), overwhelmingly defeating his challenger Isaac Tumuhimbise, who trailed with 1,105 votes (17.8%).
In his post-victory remarks at the Rukungiri District Council Hall, where the tallying was held, Matiita extended gratitude to his supporters for their unwavering commitment during the campaign season.
“This is not just my victory—it’s a victory for all of us who believe in a better, united Rukungiri Municipality,” he said. “Let’s keep the momentum. The journey to 2026 begins now, and I invite all NRM supporters, including those who didn’t vote for me, to join hands as we work for a stronger future.”
Matiita emphasized reconciliation and mobilization as key strategies going forward, urging supporters not to rest, but to double efforts in grassroots engagement to ensure an NRM win in the general elections.
His landslide victory now positions him as a front-runner for the mayoral seat, with the party rallying behind him to retain political dominance in the municipality.
