Bishop Comboni College Kambuga has been crowned the 2026 Kigezi Zone USSSA U20 boys champions after a 2–0 victory over Bishop Ruhindi Kebisoni High School in a final played today at Rukungiri Main Stadium.

The Kigezi Zone USSSA U20 boys’ competition, hosted by Makobore High School in Kinyansano, Rukungiri Municipality, kicked off on Friday, 10th April 2026, and concluded this evening with an impressive performance from Bishop Comboni, sealing their win in the final.

B.Comboni’s victory brings renewed pride to Kanungu District, coming shortly after the school’s U20 girls’ team was also crowned Kigezi Zone USSSA champions in a tournament held in Rukiga District last month.

While speaking shortly after the final match, the Kigezi Sub-regional USSSA Chairperson, Mr. Rukundo Onesmus Rurihoona, congratulated Bishop Comboni upon their triumph. He also commended all participating secondary schools for promoting unity and discipline throughout the competition. On a special note, he praised referees for upholding professionalism and integrity, resisting any form of bribery during the tournament.

Mr. Rurihoona further appreciated Makobore High School for providing adequate facilities and maintaining a high level of cleanliness and discipline as hosts. He also lauded schools from Rukungiri and Kanungu districts for their strong participation in games and sports, noting that their involvement surpasses that of districts like Rubanda, Rukiga, Kisoro, and Kabale. He called upon headteachers to continue supporting sports as a way of nurturing and developing student talent.

Speaking as the guest of honor before the awarding of medals, the Rukungiri Deputy RDC, Mr. Wilberforce Ongom, applauded the spirit of unity and courage demonstrated through sports, particularly in Rukungiri District. He commended the USSSA leadership and headteachers for prioritizing co-curricular activities that help nurture student talent and promote schools.

He also highlighted the improved discipline among players, coaches, and referees across all participating teams. Mr. Ongom specifically noted the positive transformation of Makobore High School, which previously had a reputation for violence during competitions. He urged players to continue embracing discipline, unity, and hard work to advance their talents in the future.

Brother Katushabe Innocent, the headteacher of Bishop Comboni College Kambuga, expressed excitement and pride while speaking to Boona FM after the victory. He noted that the school has been consistently working hard and preparing over the years to win the championship, and pledged to maintain that consistency.

He added that the school’s commitment to sports has already helped nurture and elevate student talent, with some players progressing in their careers through collaborations with teams in Buganda.

Meanwhile, of the four teams that reached the semifinals, three—Makobore High School, Bishop Ruhindi Kebisoni Secondary School, and champions Bishop Comboni College Kambuga—have qualified to represent the Kigezi Sub-region at the USSSA U20 National Championship, set to kick off on 10th May 2026.
