The Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, has called on Christians in Rukungiri to reject the belief that poverty is inevitable and instead embrace faith, hard work, and determination to achieve their dreams.

Delivering his Good Friday sermon at All Saints Church Rukungiri, Bishop Asiimwe addressed hundreds of believers from Rujumbura Archdeaconry who had gathered for prayers after a solemn procession through the town carrying crosses.

In his message, the bishop emphasized the significance of Good Friday in the Christian faith, urging Christians to reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He called on believers to repent, dedicate their lives to God, and follow Christ’s example in overcoming temptation and life’s challenges.

Bishop Asiimwe reminded the congregation that Jesus Christ, whom he described as the savior of mankind, died on the cross to redeem humanity from sin—an ultimate expression of God’s love. He encouraged Christians to celebrate this sacrifice through acts of kindness, reconciliation, and service to others.

Addressing economic challenges, the bishop strongly challenged what he described as a “poverty mindset” among some Africans. He urged Christians to abandon the belief that prosperity is unattainable, stressing that faith, resilience, and hard work can transform lives. He illustrated his message by noting that Jesus, despite having divine power, chose a humble life to serve humanity.

He called on believers to remain steadfast in faith, work diligently, and support one another in overcoming poverty and hardship.

In his concluding prayer, Bishop Asiimwe offered a special and emotional appeal for justice for Kizza Besigye, leader of the People’s Front for Freedom, who is currently detained at Ruzira Prison. He prayed for truth and justice to prevail for Besigye and all innocent prisoners.
