The Bishop of the Kigezi diocese, the Rt Rev Gaddie Akanjuna, has eulogized Ms. Constance Hornby, an esteemed missionary educationist from England and the founder of Hornby Junior and High School both affiliated with the Church of Uganda and aided by the government for her significant impact on supporting girls’ education in the Kigezi Sub-region.
Bishop Akanjuna paid tribute to Ms. Constance Hornby during his sermon at the centenary celebrations of Hornby Junior and High School at St Peter’s Cathedral Church- Rugarama in Kabale District. He commemorated her for her unwavering dedication to empowering girl children through education in the Kigezi Sub-region.
The bishop urged the teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as the students, to reflect upon the noble endeavors of the school’s founder, who passed away in 1993. He encouraged them to uphold her legacy by embracing the school motto, “Mukundane,” which emphasizes the importance of loving one another.
The late Constance Hornby was hailed as a visionary and committed individual who devoted her life to nurturing girl child education. The bishop praised her for her foresight and relentless efforts in this noble cause. Additionally, Bishop Akanjuna urged the students to work diligently, remain focused, and cultivate discipline, emphasizing the rewarding outcomes that arise from hard work.
As the guest of honor, Honorable Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, the state minister for Gender in charge of youth and children, reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the education of visually impaired individuals. Minister Mateke emphasized that visually impaired students should receive top priority in accessing educational services across various institutions.
The Minister commended Hornby Junior and High School for its holistic approach to nurturing learners. She acknowledged that the school not only focuses on academic excellence but also provides a well-rounded education. Minister Mateke urged parents, teachers, and other staff members to wholeheartedly embrace their responsibility in nurturing children and safeguarding them from the allure of worldly pleasures.
As part of Centenary Celebrations, the minister commissioned the groundbreaking of the construction of a multipurpose hall at Hornby High School and Merab- Kivengere ICT Laboratory at Hornby Junior School.
