The Rt. Rev. Gaddie Akanjuna, Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, strongly criticized the government’s decision to distribute 30 million condoms during the Christmas and New Year festive season in high-risk areas across the country.
The condemnation was voiced during the wedding ceremony of George William Kanagizi, the Presidential Advisor on Kigezi Affairs, and Flavia Kanagizi, the Kabale District Speaker, held at St. Matthew Church of Uganda Kumbura in Bugarama Sub County of Kabale District.
Bishop Akanjuna expressed disapproval of the condom distribution announcement made by Dr. Daniel Byamukama, Head of HIV Prevention at the Uganda Aids Commission, who emphasized the urgency of addressing the high incidence of new HIV infections.
Despite this, Bishop Akanjuna asserted the church’s commitment to offering prayers for those responsible for the decision, expressing hope for their repentance.
The remarks were made during the wedding ceremony, underscoring the Bishop’s disagreement with the government’s strategy to combat HIV spread during the festive season.
