Arts teachers under the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) have announced plans to resume a sit-down strike in protest of what they describe as unfair salary disparities within the teaching profession.
The announcement was made during a gathering held at Obligato along Bombo Road in Kampala, where teachers vowed to withdraw their labour starting 15th September, coinciding with the opening of the third school term.
UNATU Secretary General Filbert Baguma said the decision follows the government’s continued silence on their long-standing demand for salary enhancement for all categories of teachers in primary and post-primary schools who were excluded from the 2022/2023 salary increments.
Baguma stressed that industrial action remains the teachers’ last resort, noting that they have been patient despite facing economic hardships.
He further emphasized that the strike will continue until the government takes concrete steps to address the salary disparities and provides a clear commitment to resolving the issue.
UNATU is urging the government to urgently engage with the union to avoid disruption of the school calendar at this crucial time.
