The Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) for Mitooma District, Canon Ephraim Bamugyendera, has urged SACCO operators to adopt mediation as a more polite and effective approach to recovering loans from defaulting members.
He made the remarks on March 28, 2026, while officiating at the 25th Annual General Meeting of Mitooma People’s Trust SACCO, held at Peak Hotel. The meeting attracted delegates from across the district.
Canon Bamugyendera commended the SACCO for promoting financial inclusion in Mitooma District and emphasized that mediation in loan recovery could help safeguard SACCOs from financial strain. He noted that such approaches align with the government’s broader vision of strengthening SACCOs as vehicles for economic empowerment, including supportive tax policies.
The Mitooma District Commercial Officer, Danston Mugume, encouraged SACCO leaders to adopt digital systems for savings and credit services. He said online transactions would improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance accessibility. Mugume also called for increased attention to older members, urging SACCOs to provide them with loan opportunities in recognition of their foundational role.
Speaking at the same event, the Chairperson of the Board of Mitooma People’s Trust SACCO, Richard Matsiko, highlighted the institution’s steady performance and revealed ongoing preparations to mark its silver jubilee in August. He stressed the importance of recovering outstanding loans to prevent financial losses and ensure sustainability.
Meanwhile, the SACCO’s external auditor, Ndahula Martin from Allied Auditing Firm, underscored the need for strict adherence to financial standards and regulatory frameworks to guarantee the SACCO’s continuity.
Some members, including Lauben Yerinde and Jenifer Nabaasa, expressed appreciation for the SACCO’s impact, noting that its loans have significantly supported their investments in agriculture, businesses, and education.
