Rev. Canon George Bazahuza, the Archdeacon of Bwambara Archdeaconry in North Kigezi Diocese, has reconciled with Christians of Bugarama Church of Uganda Parish following recent tensions. During a memorable service at Nyabugando Church of Uganda on Monday, December 23, 2024, Rev. Canon Bazahuza called for unity and repentance, urging Christians to move forward in faith and cooperation.
The service marked a triple celebration: the official opening of the newly constructed church, the baptism of 11 children, and the wedding of two couples. Rev. Canon Bazahuza emphasized forgiveness and commended the congregation for their dedication to building a reputable church in the Diocese. He urged believers to avoid criticism of the clergy, encouraging a spirit of repentance and reconciliation among all parties.
The disagreements stemmed from events on September 29, 2024, during preparations for a thanksgiving service organized by Mr. God Oworinawe to support the church’s construction. The invitation of Hon. Mary Paula Turyahikayo as the guest of honor sparked tensions when Rev. Canon Bazahuza opposed her participation on religious grounds, defending Hon. Jim Muhwezi instead. The fallout led to the suspension of Rev. Midius Twinomugisha, the priest of Bugarama Church of Uganda Parish, and escalated accusations against Rev. Canon Bazahuza over the handling of a donation from Elder Emmanuel Kikoni.
Despite the challenges, the thanksgiving service was a success, raising 10 million shillings from Elder Kikoni for roofing the church. During his sermon, Rev. Canon Bazahuza praised the congregation’s efforts, expressing gratitude for their support and resilience.
Rev. Bernard Turinawe, the new parish priest, encouraged Christians to abandon gossip and focus on collaboration to further the church’s development. “Unity and cooperation are key to our growth as a community of faith,” he said.
Gerald Kacoco, the head of laity, voiced concerns about the suspension of Rev. Midius Twinomugisha, whom he described as a driving force behind the church’s progress. Meanwhile, Mr. Oworinawe commended the generosity of Elder Kikoni, Hon. Mary Paula Turyahikayo, and Mr. Frank Rukanurwa, whose contributions have significantly advanced the construction efforts.
The service concluded with a renewed sense of unity and purpose among the congregation, as the newly completed church stands as a testament to their collective determination and faith.
