Nelson Habasa, a church of Uganda Christian from Rubanda District has withdrawn a petition in which he had petitioned to the tribunal of the Church of Uganda to nullify the election of Rt. Rev Gaddie Akanjuna as the Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi.

On April 20th, 2023, Habasa through his Lawyers of Lawgic Advocates filed articles of presentment to the Provincial Secretary against Bishop Akanjuna for the willful violation of the provincial constitution, canons of the church of Uganda contrary to Article 13 (6) of the Provincial constitution of the church of Uganda and Canon 3.6.2 and 3.7.22.

Habasa had claimed that Bishop Akajuna was appointed when he lacked a degree in theology or divinity or a post graduate diploma of theology or divinity seeking nullification of his consecration and appointment.

Habasa had also written to the Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda demanding that the Church of Uganda constitute a Provincial Tribunal to hear a presentment against him.

Now In his withdrawal letter, Habasa says that on May 17th, 2023, he was reliably informed of the schedule for the provincial chancellor to constitute the provincial tribunal nominated by the House of Bishops in July with the commencement of hearings

Speaking with our reporter in a short telephone interview, Habasa confirmed the withdrawal saying that after being guided by God and his conscience, he learned that Bishop Akanjuna has all the required documents to qualify as the Bishop.

Habasa stated that he found his petition not worthy of being adjudicated on, thereby withdrawing it, requesting a united Diocese of Kigezi in the pursuit of preaching the gospel to the world.

His withdrawal letter was submitted and received by Rev Susan Ayesu, secretary at the province at the Provincial headquarters, Namirembe in Kampala on Tuesday this week in the Presence of the Kigezi Diocesan head of laity, Canon Johnson Baryantuma Munono and Counsel Eliab Naturinda Mporera who acted as the mediator.
