Police is investigating a break-in at the headquarters of the Bank of Uganda in Kampala following an incident in which seven laptops were stolen in what authorities have described as an unlawful entry.
In a public notice issued on Monday, May 4, 2026, the central bank confirmed that the security breach occurred at its head office on Plot 45, Kampala Road near City Square. The bank said it immediately alerted security agencies, which have since launched a joint investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities assured the public that despite the breach, normal operations at the central bank have not been disrupted, and all core banking services are continuing as usual.
The incident prompted a heightened security response in central Kampala, with police and military units cordoning off several buildings in the city center, including Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza, Kalungi Plaza, and City House, as part of ongoing operations aimed at recovering the stolen items and identifying those responsible. Several suspects have already been arrested in connection with the operation.
Security agencies have not yet confirmed whether the break-in involved internal staff or external criminal groups. Investigations remain ongoing.
The latest incident comes against the backdrop of previous security and integrity concerns at the central bank, including past investigations into financial systems breaches and reported cases of internal theft and disciplinary action, which have raised continued attention to security within sensitive institutional areas.
