Residents of Kahama Village in Kafunjo Parish, Buhara Sub-county are mourning the heartbreaking loss of three pupils from Bwera Primary School who died after being struck by lightning during a heavy downpour Sunday evening.
The incident occurred at around 5pm as rain intensified across the area. The children were reportedly taking shelter in a kitchen at home while their parents were away when the tragic strike happened.
The victims have been identified as 13-year-old Faith Namanya, a Primary Five pupil and daughter of Ronald Rukarekwaho; 13-year-old Daphine Musimiseki, a Primary Four pupil; and four-year-old Shine Ainebyona, a nursery pupil. Daphine and Shine were sisters, while Faith was their neighbour.
Preliminary reports indicate that lightning struck the structure they were sheltering in, killing all three children instantly. The sudden loss has left their families devastated and the entire community in deep grief.
The head teacher of Bwera Primary School, Edson Bikworwomuhangi, described the incident as extremely painful, saying it has deeply affected both the school and the wider community. He noted that such events are beyond human control and called for prayers and support for the grieving families.
The LC1 Chairperson of Kahama Village, Jonan Turihohabwe, expressed concern over communication challenges during emergencies, saying initial attempts to reach police immediately after the incident were unsuccessful, which delayed official reporting.
Authorities are yet to issue a formal statement as investigations and community response efforts continue.
