Anglican Church Bishops in Western Uganda, together with their wives, have gathered in North Kigezi Diocese, Rukungiri district, for their annual fellowship, aimed at discussing the development of their dioceses in both spirit and body.

The Bishops from Bunyoro, Rwenzori, Ankole, and Kigezi regions have been fellowshipping each year since 1976, rotating among the dioceses, a system they say has helped them develop different areas and foster connections.

The Fellowship chairperson, North West Ankole Diocese Bishop Rt Rev Amos Magezi, speaking at the opening of the fellowship at the Bishop’s residence at Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano, noted that such meetings allow them to renew their spirit, discuss development, and meet and share a meal, often making those retired feel motivated to serve again.

He added that they also elect new leaders during the fellowship. However, he dismissed political discussions at the meeting, emphasizing that the meeting is primarily spiritual.

The host Bishop, Rt Rev Onesimus Asiimwe, welcomed the Bishops to the diocese, laying out a significant agenda starting Wednesday evening through Sunday, when all over 30 in-service and retired Bishops and their wives will lead a service at Emmanuel Cathedral.

The fellowship meeting comes against the backdrop of the passing of the Coffee Amendment Act, with most of the dioceses in the region having adopted coffee as a key enterprise. Many analysts suggest that the passing of the coffee bill may limit the potential in coffee production.
