At least 96 women were inducted into the Christian Fellowship Ministry at All Saints Parish, Church of Uganda in Ntungamo on Sunday, with an emphasis on women’s discipleship and spiritual development.

The women, representing various social and political backgrounds and coming from different churches, expressed their commitment to joining the only church women’s organization that unites all women, including single mothers, divorcees, widows, and married women.

In her sermon during the induction, Ms. Rosette Mwebembezi, a Senior Assistant Secretary in Ntungamo District Local Government, encouraged married women to embrace and support those who have faced marital challenges or have chosen not to marry, to strengthen the church.

Rev. Ezra Mwesigwa, the Church Vicar, acknowledged that the Christian Women Fellowship had initially been viewed as a confusing association within the church, perceived to conflict with the more established Mothers’ Union. However, he noted that the foundation of the fellowship could contribute significantly to the growth of the church.

Founded in the 1930s, the Christian Women Fellowship brings together all women in the church, aged 18 and above, whether married or unmarried. In contrast, the Mothers’ Union only includes women who are married in the church.

The Church of Uganda has recently initiated efforts to reach out to single mothers, in response to growing concerns about increasing divorce rates and men neglecting their families.

Among the 96 inducted women were prominent figures in Ntungamo, such as District Health Officer Sr. Beatrice Chemisut, 84-year-old Canon Ketty Kapatsi, and local businesswomen, among others.
