91.8 Boona FM has officially launched the highly anticipated second edition of the Boona FM Cup tournament, a thrilling community event aimed at nurturing local talent and giving back to the people of Rukungiri.
Speaking at the launch, Maanige Wenceslas, one of Boona FM’s directors, emphasized the importance of this tournament in developing the region’s sports talent while fostering a sense of community. He urged fans, local leaders, and sports enthusiasts to rally behind the event, which promises excitement and community pride. “This cup is not just about football; it’s about empowering local talent and creating opportunities for our youth,” Maanige said. He also encouraged local business owners to take advantage of the bustling tournament atmosphere to promote and sell their products at various pitches.
Reflecting on the success of the inaugural Boona FM Cup, Maanige proudly highlighted that one of the standout players, Ankunda Earnest, was scouted during the tournament and now plays for the renowned Vipers SC.
This year’s vice chairperson, Mr. Agaba Edson, revealed that the tournament will kick off on November 17th, 2024, with the finals scheduled for December 15th, 2024. He called on the community to come out in full force to support their local teams and emphasized the importance of fair play and respect for the tournament rules.
Kakyene Namanya, Boona FM’s station manager and one of the key organizers, shared exciting details about the event. A total of 16 teams representing all sub-counties, town councils, and divisions in Rukungiri will compete. The winning team will walk away with a coveted trophy and a cow valued at UGX 2 million. The runners-up will receive UGX 1 million, while the third and fourth teams will be awarded UGX 400,000 each. All participating teams will also receive financial support along with foot balls to ensure a successful competition.
Kakyene urged everyone to keep politics and division out of the event, stressing that the Boona FM Cup is for everyone, regardless of political or religious affiliation. “This tournament is a celebration of unity through sports. Let’s keep it inclusive and enjoyable for all,” he said.
Asiimwe Immaculate, the DFA representative and delegate to FUFA Western Region, praised Boona FM for their exceptional organization of the event and assured the support of both the Rukungiri DFA and FUFA Western Region.
Team managers and coaches expressed their excitement and readiness for the tournament, pledging to deliver thrilling performances and represent their communities with pride.
In last year’s competition, Buyanja Town Council emerged victorious after defeating Bwambara Sub-county 2:0 in the finals. This year’s edition promises even more excitement as teams prepare to battle for the prestigious Boona FM Cup.
