Police in Rukungiri District are investigating a shocking murder case in which a six-year-old boy was killed by his cousin brother.
The deceased has been identified as Stephen Ayebare, a pupil at Rubanga Primary School and resident of Kishonga Upper Cell, Rubanga North, Buyanja Subcounty.
According to police, the incident happened on September 1, 2025, at around 8:00 PM when the suspect, Anthony Begumisa, 32, allegedly attacked Ayebare, fatally cutting him, before turning on his brother, Ahimbisibwe Laborman, who had rushed in to rescue the child.
Eyewitnesses told police that the suspect, who had earlier complained about noise from a nearby salon, suddenly came out of the house armed with a panga and attacked the child. Alarm was raised, and residents led by area chairperson Kakunya Innocent surrounded the house where the suspect had locked himself inside and threatened to harm anyone who tried to arrest him.
The residents overpowered Begumisa, disarmed him, and handed him over to police. The victims were rushed to Nyakibale Hospital, where Ayebare was pronounced dead at around 3:00 AM the following morning.
Police spokesperson for Kigezi Region, ASP Maate Elly, confirmed the incident, saying murder charges have been preferred against the suspect and that the exhibits – a panga and power saw – were recovered from the scene.
“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the motive behind this brutal act,” Maate said.
