Police in Rubanda is investigating the circumstances under which a 55-year-old woman died after she allegedly took a local sorghum drink that was contaminated.
The deceased has been identified as Vastina Twakire , a resident of Rwondo village Shebeya parish Hamurwa sub county Rubanda district.
It’s alleged that on 25/03/2023 a group of about 30 women held a group meeting in the home of one Jesca Baremereirwe where they prepared a local sorghum drink commonly known as obushera which they took at around 2:00PM and after which they went to their homes.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesman explains that during the night, the members of the group and many others were taken to Hamurwa health center iv the next morning including the deceased Twakire Vastina.
On 27/02/2023, her condition worsened and she was transferred to Rugarama hospital in Kabale municipality, from where she died the next day
Maate says police were notified by the area chairperson Hamurwa cell one James Mugabe.
A team of officers visited the scene,
The body was taken for postmortem at Kabale referral hospital mortuary which was conducted by the police surgeon and statements was taken from other patients.
Inquiries are ongoing.
