Police in Kanungu District are investigating the death of a 51-year-old man, Ngambeki Spiriano, who was killed during a violent domestic altercation with his former wife on Tuesday afternoon.
The tragic incident occurred on 18th November 2025 at around 2:00 pm at Group Farm B Cell, Kibimbiri Parish, Kihihi Sub-county.
According to preliminary police findings, the suspect — identified as 48-year-old Nzabaruntume Dinavance — previously lived with the deceased as husband and wife and the two had children together. However, the couple separated, and Spiriano relocated to Kebisoni in Rukungiri District, where he married another woman, leaving Dinavance at their marital home with her young grandchild.
On the reported day, Spiriano travelled to Kanungu with his second wife but left her at Kibimbiri Trading Centre before proceeding alone to his former home to check on Dinavance. It is alleged that a serious fight broke out behind the house, leaving both parties with severe injuries. Spiriano reportedly died on the spot as a result of the assault.
After realizing that the man had died, the suspect allegedly called her son-in-law, Benon, asking him to pick up his child. When Benon arrived, he found his father-in-law lying dead near the back door of the house. His alarm prompted neighbours to rush to the scene, where they apprehended the suspect as she attempted to flee.
Police responded swiftly, re-arrested the suspect, secured and documented the scene, and recorded statements from key witnesses. Investigators also recovered clothes believed to belong to the deceased from a pit latrine, suggesting the body had been cleaned and redressed after the incident.
The deceased’s body was taken to Kihihi Health Centre IV for postmortem examination, while the suspect was admitted for treatment of a deep cut on her head sustained during the fight.
According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, inquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the altercation that resulted in the fatality.
