375 adolescent girls and young mothers from the four sub-counties in Rukungiri district in which USAID ICAN operates yesterday graduated, and were awarded certificates in various skills after completing their 9-month course.
The sub-counties in which USAID ICAN operates are Nyakyishenyi, Nyakagyeme, Bwambara and Buhunga and the adolescents together with young mothers were trained in liquid and bar soap making, weaving modern baskets, baking cakes, sewing, saving for the purpose and growing vegetables among other skills.
This project was funded by USAID in partnership with ICAN under Caritas Kabale diocese.
The project was aimed at skilling adolescent girls, especially those who dropped out of school due to covid 19 for personal sustainability.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony the Rukungiri district vice chairperson Satrinah Nahwera lauded USAID ICAN for skilling their adolescent girls and asked the Organisations to also consider boys and men.
She asked ICAN officials to consider exchange visits with different districts so that women can borrow more knowledge from each other which will transform their lives.
Evans Mubagizi, an official from ICAN Kigezi regional office based in Kabale said the organization has embarked on training of adolescent girls and young mothers on income generation through setting up small businesses
Bwambara sub-county chairperson Chris Kagayano and Benon Mugisha of Buhunga sub-county on behalf of other sub counties thanked the organization for considering their sub-counties where adolescent girls can now be able to generate their own income instead of depending on their parents and sugar daddies.
They, therefore, asked groups that graduated to officially register their groups at the sub-county level so that the government can avail them financial assistance since it helps organized groups.
