In a tightly contested mayoral race, Boazi Matiita of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has been declared the winner of the Rukungiri Municipality mayoral election, defeating two rivals, Denis Ngabirano of the People’s Progressive Front (PFF) and Balikudembe Otiko of JEEMA.
According to the official tally released by the Rukungiri District Returning Officer, Mr. Namara K. Abbas, Matiita garnered 5,759 votes, narrowly surpassing Ngabirano, who secured 5,128votes, while Otiko trailed with 88 votes. Mr. Abbas officially declared Matiita the duly elected Mayor of Rukungiri Municipality.
Matiita succeeds His Worship Charles Makulu, the outgoing mayor who opted not to seek re-election. The victory marks a significant win for NRM in a race that saw heightened competition and active voter engagement across the municipality.
